220 children make their voices heard to help peers in their region

220 children make their voices heard to help peers in their region

For the second year in a row, Kinderpostzegels (Children's Stamps) and Fonds 1818 (Foundation 1818) have joined forces. Together, they created a special, regional edition of the Kinderwallet (Children's Wallet) in South Holland. Over 220 children from five municipalities—Rijswijk, Oegstgeest, Leiden, The Hague, and Honselersdijk—helped identify children in their region who needed extra support.

The Kinderwallet is a unique initiative of Kinderpostzegels, where children can choose the destination of a special fund. With this innovative approach, children not only contribute ideas but also actually decide where the money from the Kinderwallet goes! After all, who knows better what's important to children than children themselves?

“I think it's important to help people. That makes me happy and them too. That way everyone is happy.” – Rania (11)

With a contribution of €170,000 from Fonds 1818, many children will receive extra support. The children who participated also gain something special from it. They learn about problems children in their neighborhood can face and are committed to helping others. Sofie Vriends, director of Kinderpostzegels, believes it makes perfect sense to involve children in important decisions. " It becomes very tangible for children when they can participate in thinking about how we can support children from their own neighborhood. They feel they are part of something bigger than themselves. By teaching them to be there for each other through the Kinderwallet at this age, we are working towards stronger neighborhoods in the South Holland region. Now, and in the future ."

Concrete help for children in poverty, unsafe situations and loneliness

Children's concerns are significant. Currently, war and refugees are occupying their minds. But during the conversations, they primarily indicated that three themes are limiting the development opportunities of their peers:

  • Poverty : no money for housing, food, sports, clothing, or school supplies. Laptops, mobile phones, and vacations are also often unavailable. This makes it harder for children to participate in social activities with their peers.
  • Unsafe at home : Arguments, divorces, and wartime situations make children feel unsafe. The absence of a companion, friends, or even a pet is often cited as a loss.
  • Loneliness : Bullying, racism, and illness make children feel isolated. Those who have fled or are struggling in school often experience loneliness as well.

The funds from the Children's Wallet will be used for practical support such as food parcels, a phone, summer camps, a bicycle, swimming lessons, and memberships in sports or music clubs. They will also be invested in building self-confidence through the help of coaches and peer support.

Murat Aslancik-Eymes, project advisor at Fonds 1818, explains the new approach: " We listened carefully to what the children consider important. Their input directly shaped how we distribute the funds. By giving children a voice in this way, we ensure that our support truly connects with their world. "

Making an impact together

Just like last year, Kinderpostzegels and Fonds 1818 are jointly demonstrating that when children, social organizations, and funds join forces, a real difference can be made. And that's desperately needed.
