In the Netherlands, approximately 17,500 foster families are dedicated to providing loving care for around 22,750 foster children (Pleegzorg.nl). Many foster care providers require foster families to have a spare room available. It is important for children in foster care to have their own room; a place where they can retreat and have some privacy. A place of their own where they feel safe. Furthermore, it is important for any other children in the family that they retain their own room and do not suddenly have to share it. Not all families have a spare room. Sometimes a renovation is needed.
With 'Kamer voor een Kind' (Room for a Child), Kinderpostzegels and a number of charitable foundations financed small renovations to foster family homes and the furnishing of children's rooms from 2013 until March 2024. Kinderpostzegels has supported nearly 450 foster families, enabling them to provide a pleasant, stable home for hundreds of children who could not grow up in their own families.
In 2024, Kinderpostzegels transferred the execution of the project to Stichting Ondersteuning Pleeggezin (Foster Family Support Foundation). From 2026 onwards, Kinderpostzegels will no longer be involved in the financing.
