Poverty affects children

230,000 children in the Netherlands grow up in poverty. The consequences of this are severe. Children are ashamed, it affects their self-confidence, and they cannot fully participate with their peers. Additionally, children often worry greatly about their home situation. These worries have a significant impact on their school performance and their social development, which affects them throughout their lives. Kinderpostzegels is there for these children. We offer them concrete help to make a difference.

School supplies and clothing

Not all parents have money to buy clothes or school supplies. This makes children feel different or not able to keep up at school. We help these children with necessary (school) supplies, clothes, or for example, glasses or a bicycle.

Holidays and outings

Some children never get the opportunity to go on a trip or a holiday. Yet, these kinds of outings allow children to get away from their everyday environment. They get the chance to relax and participate in social activities.

sports and culture

Being able to participate in sports, swimming lessons, or music lessons, for example, is important for a child's physical and mental development. They can join in with friends, it offers relaxation and an outlet.

Children draw attention to poverty

Every year, Kinderpostzegels asks hundreds of children, through the Children's Wallet: 'Which children should Kinderpostzegels help?'. Time and again, they answer: children living in poverty. We are happy to respond to this, because who knows better what children need than the children themselves?

About the Children's Wallet

The Children's Wallet is a unique method used by Kinderpostzegels where we involve schoolchildren in thinking about which children need help and how. During interactive workshops in the classroom, they learn about problems children can face and how they can do something for their peers in this way. For children, by children!

Our approach is based on three pillars

Safety

Children develop best when they can grow up in an environment where they feel seen, heard, and supported. That is why we are committed to creating places where children can be themselves, build confidence, and find help when needed. In this way, we create the foundation children need to feel safe and to develop.

Safety net

No child should have to face the world alone. That's why we help children feel connected to the people around them. We strengthen relationships with peers, parents, role models, and other involved adults. This ensures that children can rely on a network of people who listen to them, encourage them, and are there for them.

skills

Children face challenges in their lives. That's why we help them to become more resilient. We give children the space to gain new experiences, discover their talents, and build confidence in their own abilities. This way, they develop the resilience and skills needed to tackle challenges and look to the future with confidence.

You can never achieve real change alone. That's why we work with social organizations in the Netherlands and beyond to achieve our goals. View our project partners here.
